Two "Greats" on a Creek (Heron & Egret)

A few days ago, my two dogs and I were creek walking (a favorite summer pastime), when in the distance I saw a Great Blue Heron. He was so distant that the dogs did not even see him (or her). As we proceeded downstream, I kept my eyes on the heron, alternating between binoculars and a camera. I wanted to get at least one good image despite the far distance . . . and the dogs. This cropped image is the best I could do.

As we gradually made our way, I expected the heron to relocate and did then find her or him elsewhere on the creek, moving more distant from us. Attempting more photos, I didn't realize that the subject of these was in fact a different bird--a lovely Great Egret! You see, the egret had acquired a bluish hue caused by the shadow of tree cover. When I discovered my error, I was thrilled because only days prior I had seen at least two (maybe three . . . it was hard to tell as they were flying in and out over the creek above the tree crowns).

Finally, you might want to see at least one of the dogs involved in this small adventure. Here's an image of Henry, my pointer/border collie mix. Next time, I'll be sure to feature Rosie, but b
efore I go, if you love birds or have children (8 to 11) who love them, you might like my trilogy Of the Wing.  Learn more about it at
