A Green Heron Prettily Posing

I'm not a photographer . . . and even this is an understatement. So you can imagine my pleasure on capturing the image of this lovely Green Heron. On Wednesday last week, I took my two cousins to see Sach's Bridge (in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where I live). This bridge crosses the Marsh Creek and is a favorite destination of visiting tourist both for its beauty (covered bridge) and its history (both Union and Confederate forces crossed this bridge during the campaign of the Battle of Gettysburg). But let's not get side-tracked from the Green Heron.

Often times when walking my dogs downstream within Marsh Creek, I've seen a Green Heron, typically flying up from its hidden location on the water where he or she is stalking minnows, tadpoles, insects, or other critters.  Whether those sightings were of this individual is another question. But this is the first time I had the opportunity to photograph one. In fact, this heron stood quite poised and still for no small time, at least a minute, and long enough for me to point and click.

Since last week, I've been back to the creek twice and have been graced with sightings of a Great Egret and, just yesterday, two Great Blue Herons flying down creek, one behind the other and directly overhead. What a thrill! Of course, I almost always spot a Great Blue at Marsh Creek, but it's thrilling every time. Now if only one would stand still long enough for me to catch an image--ha!

Until next time . . . Oh! Before I go, if you love birds or have children (8 to 11) who love them, you might like my trilogy Of the Wing.  Learn more about it at

Hope to see you there!
